Emergency crews arrived at a large commercial fire on Thursday afternoon, September 5th, at 1 p.m. The fire started at SMB Products on Rosemary Blvd in Akron, Ohio. Due to the heavy smoke and burning toxic chemicals, rescue crews evacuated the area within a half-mile radius until they could test the air. Residents at 3 p.m. could hear loud explosions and saw black plumes of smoke over the city. Over 100 firefighters arrived on the scene and spent over 8 hours extinguishing the blaze and subsequent hotspots.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. No significant injuries occurred; however, several rescuers were taken to the hospital for minor injuries including respiratory issues due to chemical exposures. The company, SMB Products, performs contracted packaging of household, automotive, and personal care products, including aerosol and liquid fills. The building contained highly flammable chemicals, including ethanol, ether, and xylene. The firefighters' biggest concern out of all the substances was the xylene and the toxic fumes it produces. This product is used as a degreasing agent and thinner in paints. All equipment used in battling this fire will need to be decontaminated. Ohio EPA will test all surrounding water in the area and ensure it is now safe.
