On Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, an IKEA store near Chicago was damaged by a substantial fire. Joliet, IL, firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving calls of heavy smoke from an IKEA on Emerald Drive. Once rescuers arrived at the IKEA distribution center, they quickly started working on the roof. The fire started around 10:00 in the morning and was extinguished by that afternoon, as some rescuers remained on the scene until hot spots were extinguished. The blaze damaged a significant portion of the roof due to the high morning winds in Chicago. The roof had over nine thousand solar panels, and at least 100 were destroyed. The panels generate around 3.4 million kWh of electricity annually.

One rescuer was admitted to the hospital due to exhaustion, but thankfully, all employees were safely evacuated from the building. The damage was so extensive that it also damaged the interior of the building. Over 80 firefighters, eight engines, and five ladder trucks were present to complete the job. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that the blaze originated in the area where the facility's solar panels are located, but officials have not confirmed whether the solar panels were the direct cause.
