An industrial fire occurred early Monday morning, June 30th, at the Aevitas Specialty Services Industrial Complex on Lycaste Street near Jefferson Avenue. A delivery truck driver reported the blaze after seeing smoke and hearing popping sounds. Employees also noticed smoke and steam, quickly initiated an emergency shutdown, and called the police. The two-alarm fire presented significant challenges for rescuers due to the dense, black smoke, which severely impacted air quality. Environmental services responded promptly to test the air and ensure conditions remained safe. Officials expressed concern over the presence of a 2,000-gallon sulfuric acid drum and multiple oil drums, which contributed to the fire's intensity. Hundreds of gallons of oil surrounded the facility, further complicating firefighting efforts.

No civilians were injured, but one Detroit firefighter sustained a back injury and was rushed to the hospital. The first responder remains in stable condition. With the facility less than a mile from neighborhoods and schools, officials shut down surrounding roads for safety reasons. Prior to this incident, the facility had been cited for safety violations in May, including improper storage and containment of industrial byproducts. Violations included outdoor storage of liquid waste and overflowing indoor sumps. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
