Around 11:30 p.m., on February 26th, 911 operators received calls that a grain elevator was on fire in Hawley, Minnesota. Over 15 fire departments responded to the fire. They used tanker trucks and cranes to help extinguish the fire and move debris around. Seven hours passed before authorities controlled the blaze and it took nearly eight hours to extinguish it. Hawley's pump can only generate about 600 gallons a minute, the same flow rate as a ladder hose. Water supply became so strained that city officials requested that residents use water only if necessary.

The grain elevator was not in use at the time of the fire and the cause is under investigation by officials. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and although a smoldering fire started across the street, no other structures sustained damage. By Monday morning, firefighters extinguished all hot spots. Officials took a precautionary step of calling off all schools and local businesses until they were sure it was safe to resume.
