On July 24th, a large yard storage fire broke out in Rosemead, California, sending black smoke over San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles. The three-alarm fire was on River Avenue, south of the 10 Freeway. Wooden pallets and 55-gallon drums were involved and fully consumed in the fire. Over 70 firefighters responded, and a hazardous materials team was called in due to burning unknown substances. Maneuvering large fire trucks through narrow streets posed challenges, but firefighters managed to control the fire within a few hours.

Authorities are still investigating the fire, with the cause currently unknown. Paramedics treated one firefighter for a heat-related injury, but no significant injuries occurred. The fire prompted the evacuation of nearby residents, many of whom were alarmed by the thick black smoke that filled the sky.

Risk Logic engineers can assist businesses that handle recycling, yard storage, and storage facilities. Please read our article regarding idle pallet fire exposure.  Companies must know how to store idle pallets both inside and outside buildings to prevent potential fires or the spread to nearby structures. Our engineers can make recommendations regarding the safe distance from your building and other buildings surrounding the area. The number and type of pallets, along with the wall construction, determine the necessary separation between the building and the pallets. Additional considerations involve providing both automatic and manual exterior fire protection. NFPA and FM Data Sheets have specific guidelines to follow when storing pallets.
