On January 28th, fire rescue crews quickly contained a blaze at an apartment complex fire in Urbana, Illinois, avoiding significant destruction to a multi-family residence. The Urbana Fire Department responded to the two-alarm fire within minutes of receiving the call. Firefighters saw flames coming from a second-floor window upon arrival. A ladder truck and command officers assisted the Urbana crews in battling the fire. Rescuers extinguished the flames within minutes while successfully rescuing one person from the first floor. Although no one reported any injuries, the authorities declared three apartment units uninhabitable. Two of those units were occupied by tenants at the time, and the property owner was able to relocate them. Once authorities deemed the building safe, they allowed the remaining tenants to reenter their apartments.

The fire began in a trash chute, which allowed smoke to spread through several levels of the building. Rescuers searched the upper five floors and were able to evacuate 55 residents. Thirty-five rescuers from Urbana and other surrounding areas responded to the scene. Luckily, firefighters gained control of the fire within 30 minutes of the first engine’s arrival. Urbana crews continued to be on the scene to assist with cleanup. The County Housing Authority stated that maintenance workers were removing the fire protection water used on the building. Officials reminded tenants about having a plan in case of a fire and the vital role of fire alarms in preventing tragedies.
