On December 20th, in Bristol, Virginia, a massive fire broke out on the Virginia Intermont College campus. The Fire Department received the alert a little after midnight, urging firefighters from all three stations to respond and request immediate aid from Bristol, Tennessee, and the nearby departments. Flames consumed the primary building, which was noticeable in Virginia and Tennessee. By 2 a.m., News Channel witnessed the building collapse as first responders focused on safety concerns. Upon arrival, the fire was far gone and quickly spread due to the old construction, the furnishings in the building, and the contents, such as paper and books. Hours later, the fire was under control.

No civilians sustained injuries, but one firefighter was hospitalized. Three out of four buildings were destroyed. As a precaution, Elementary schools in the nearby public school district were closed on Friday. Rescuers used almost twelve tanker trucks to supply water and operated five aerial ladder trucks to battle the inferno. The city councilman will meet with the owners of U.S. Magis International to discuss plans for securing the property and ensuring its safety. The college closed its doors in 2014 and has remained vacant since. This was not its first fire at this location. The city of Bristol will likely have to bear the cost of the cleanup.
