A Home Depot store in San Jose, CA, was engulfed in a massive fire on April 9th, 2022. A man set the 98,827-sf store ablaze while stealing tools, quickly consuming the building in flames. The resulting five-alarm fire, estimated to have caused a loss of over $17 million, was a challenging battle for the more than 100 firefighters who responded to the call. The blocked fire lane hampered their efforts, making it difficult to reach the heart of the blaze.

Given the scale of the blaze and the hazardous materials involved, it was extremely fortunate that no injuries occurred. The fire likely started in the lumber aisle. Regrettably, the store's automatic sprinkler system was reportedly disabled, which could have resulted in a tragedy, endangering not just the property but the lives of employees, customers, and first responders. After an investigation, authorities fined Home Depot over $1.3 million for fire code violations. Investigators found that at least 13 other Home Depot locations received fire code violation notices between 2018 and 2023 since the fire.
