On Monday morning, November 18th, a massive fire engulfed a vacant mill building in Chelsea, MA. Over 100 firefighters from surrounding communities helped extinguish the blaze. The fire erupted at the abandoned Forbes mill on Crescent Avenue around 12:30 a.m. After several hours, the roof and several floors collapsed down to the basement. The Fire Chief described the building as hazardous and barricaded the area. By 6 a.m., firefighters had controlled the flames but continued addressing hotspots.

The rescuers battled the fire defensively, using hoses that stretched across blocks of streets, cutting through commuter rail fences to access water. A pre-established fire attack plan prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby structures, though concerns about collapse persist, and the building will likely be demolished. Authorities suspect arson as witnesses reported seeing people fleeing the area before the fire spread. The fire disrupted MBTA commuter rail service and forced road closures. Mary Burke Elementary, the nearby school, also closed for the day. They reported no injuries, and the state fire marshal continues to investigate the cause. The building was vacant for 15 years, with reported routine inspections due to possible fire and other risks. They do not believe that automatic sprinkler protection was provided in this vacant warehouse.

Risk Logic helps warehouse owners identify potential risks and protect their property through effective loss prevention measures. RLI engineers can provide recommendations on automatic sprinklers and monitoring systems to safeguard properties. Damaging fires in vacant buildings are often avoidable. Regular inspections of fire protection systems can address damage and vandalism. Idle properties face higher fire risks, making active sprinkler systems crucial. Contact RLI to assess potential risks and develop a tailored fire prevention plan at your facility.
