On Wednesday, February 26th, a warehouse fire in Portsmouth, VA erupted on Duke Street. Approximately 80 firefighters arrived from Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and the local Naval Medical Center. They quickly developed an action plan to contain the blaze. Dense smoke dispersed across Portsmouth and the Elizabeth River as firefighters battled the blaze. As the fire raged, several transformers on nearby power lines burst, with at least four loud explosions heard in the area. Firefighters worked for over six hours to extinguish the remaining hotspots. Officials evacuated all nearby buildings, workforce, and vehicles as a safety provision.
The fire was close to electrical equipment leading Dominion Energy to disconnect power for a short time which affected over 3,000 customers. The warehouse owner utilized the former Custom Windows of Tidewater building for storage of materials for rental homes, personal items, and collectibles. Officials are continuing to examine the cause of the fire and review damages and risks to nearby properties. They believe the fire may have started outside. Thankfully, no firefighters or citizens were injured. Most of the affected Dominion Energy customers regained their power quickly; however, 1,000 customers are still awaiting permanent restorations due to damaged infrastructure like electrical poles.
