More than a dozen wildfires are currently burning across California. Officials reported initial outbreaks on August 1, and experts project continued growth throughout August and September. The fire in Gifford, located in the central part of California, has become the state's largest blaze of the year, reaching "megafire" status. Burning 131,589 acres across Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. It is now 95% contained.

The blaze has injured several people and threatened almost 3,000 homes and buildings near the Los Padres National Forest. The fire department is facing a vast amount of unreachable terrain and increasing heat waves, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. The state is facing low humidity and dry foliage, which enhances the spread of fires. These fires along State Route 166 have forced highway closures. More than 2,700 personnel have been assigned to control the wildland fire, while officials warn that smoke may pose health risks across southwest California. Officials are still investigating the cause. Ground crews and aerial units are working together to contain and extinguish the flames, while evacuation orders and warnings remain in place.
